The third season of HBO’s The Last of Us adaptation is slated for release in 2027.
That’s coming from HBO’s CEO Casey Bloy, who in an interview with Variety said the third season “is definitely planned” for 2027. Meanwhile, while there has been previous chatter about the show running for four seasons, this third outing may well in fact be its last.
“[Showrunner Craig Mazin] is still working it out whether it will be two more seasons or one more long season,” Bloy said. “It hasn’t been decided yet, and I’m following Craig’s lead on that.”
Bloy’s comments come after Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann announced he was stepping back from The Last of Us TV series to move his complete focus back to the studio.
“Obviously it was great to have Neil involved in the beginning. The whole reason that I wanted to do Last of Us is after Chernobyl, I said to Craig, ‘what do you want to do next?’ And Last of Us was what he wanted to do,” Bloy said when asked about Druckmann’s decision to step back from the show.
“That’s what was most important to me, Craig’s creative excitement about the show. It was fantastic to have Neil involved. A lot of people don’t realise that Neil has a full time job creating video games and running Naughty Dog. It’s a really big job that he’s got. So I understand why he needs to focus on that. But I believe he’s given us a good blueprint with the show. And obviously Craig is a pro, so I think we’ll be in excellent shape.
“I’m not worried at all.”
The second season of The Last of Us was recently nominated for 16 Emmys, including one for Outstanding Drama series.
In May, The Last of Us’ showrunners discussed more about where the show will go next, with Mazin affirming season three will provide more clarity to some of the events that were playing off in the background of season two, including the WLF’s war with the Seraphites.
