Racing gear manufacturer Moza has announced a raft of new additions at Gamescom, including two high-end direct drive wheelbases and a pair of licensed wheel rims from Lamborghini and Porsche racing EVs. Attendees to the show can also compete against online/IRL racers Jimmy Broadbent and Jarno Opmeer using the new equipment.
I’ve recommended Moza’s generally good value mid-range R5 and R9 wheelbases for Eurogamer in the past, so I’m most interested in seeing their new high-end wheelbases, the R21 Ultra and R25 Ultra. Direct drive offerings from most mainstream peripheral manufacturers like Logitech, Turtle Beach and Thrustmaster top out around 10nm, but these bases will be significantly more powerful. In fact, the direct drive assemblies here use “next-gen flat-wire” motors to deliver up to 25nm of peak torque, up from 21nm of peak torque on the current-gen R21 flagship that was last updated in 2023.
Of course, torque figures alone don’t make for a great racing experience – and while it’s useful to have high peak torque for certain moments, you’ll be experiencing much less for fear of fatigue over long races. More critical might be the improved torque response offered on the new models, and the inclusion of a 21-bit magnetic encoder that seems to offer roughly 10 times as much resolution as the R21. That should make for more detailed feedback which could potentially make driving easier. Both additions also incorporate RGB lighting along the edges of the unit, which can be used to indicate gear shifts, ABS and flag signals (eg there’s a yellow flag in the sector of the course that you’ve entered, so you need to slow down). It’ll be interesting to test the new Ultra wheelbases to see if the difference in force feedback is actually noticeable versus Moza’s existing lineup.
The replica wheel rims are also fascinating, which have been recreated from the Lamborghini Revuelto PHEV sportscar and Porsche Mission R EV racecar. The Revuelto wheel is fairly standard in its design, with a large D-shape, large paddle shifters and plenty of buttons on the face. The Mission R wheel is a more advanced racing design with a 5.4-inch 720p flexible OLED display, Formula-style side faux-suede grips and a bunch of hefty-looking switches and encoders.
The Porsche wheel was actually announced as an early project almost a year ago, with the car raceable in iRacing, Rennsport and Forza Horizon 5. The Lamborghini wheel was first shown even earlier, in May last year, and the car itself is pictured on the cover of The Crew Motorfest and also features in Forza Horizon 5. Presumably retail availability is now imminent.
No prices have yet been announced for anything, but I will update this post if I receive that information later. I expect the R21 Ultra to start at $849 or more, with the R25 Ultra likely in the quadruple figures, making it only an option for deep-pocketed sim racers. Similarly, the steering wheels ought to cost a fair chunk as well, with the Lamborghini wheel probably in the upper triple figures and the more complex Porsche wheel at $1500 or above.
It’ll be interesting to see how well Moza is able to deliver on these high-end halo parts, as the company is known more for its value-for-money, excellent software and wide ecosystem more than out-and-out build quality or design chops.
